Bone Mineral Densitometry (DEXA)

A bone density scan is a diagnostic procedure that measures a patient’s bone density. It is commonly used to identify and measure bone loss, which can indicate certain conditions, like osteoporosis or risk of bone fractures.

At Cloud Radiology, we provide bone density scans that are performed with the latest, state-of-the-art imaging technology to help prevent or identify certain conditions that relate to bone health.
Your doctor may recommend a bone density scan for osteoporosis, a vertebral fracture, or other bone conditions that have been suggested by an imaging test (e.g., x-ray, MRI, CT). A bone density scan may also be warranted if you have:

  • Other evidence of bone loss (due to medication or another condition)
  • A disease or condition that causes low bone density/bone loss
  • Hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Surpassed 70 years of age for both male and female

Depending on the body part being examined, the patient may be required to wear a gown. One of our friendly radiographers may also ask you to remove jewellery and/or body piercings.
